Choose a continuous industrial screw press designed for coarse, fibrous solids, with stable feeding, a suitable drainage screen and controllable discharge resistance. The correct configuration depends on the brewery’s actual grain, peak feed rate and downstream target, so confirm it with a representative material trial.
Brewer’s spent grain (BSG) is not the same as brewery wastewater sludge. It contains husk and fibrous particles, while particle size, moisture and fines can vary with the malt bill and lautering conditions. The press must convey this material without bridging, drain liquid through the screen and discharge a manageable solids fraction.
Review the HUATAO spent grain screw press application. The general
dewatering screw press range shows the wider equipment category.
Screen opening is a balance: too fine can blind with fines; too open can allow useful solids to escape with the filtrate. Ask for slot width, open area, screen profile and cleaning access. The
screw press screen cylinder is a relevant component to review.
Screw pitch, flight geometry, compression length and outlet resistance influence conveying and cake formation. Adjustable backpressure can help manage feed changes, but excessive pressure may increase torque and wear without a proportional moisture benefit. Review these parts as one system. A model reference is the

Specify both wet-feed rate and dry-solids loading, including peak hourly production and operating hours. An indicative preliminary range sometimes used in brewery discussions is 80–85% incoming moisture and 55–60% after pressing; these are not guaranteed values. Actual results depend on grain structure, screen, screw configuration, pressure and feed consistency.
Mechanical dewatering can reduce the mass of water transported; see the brewery transport-cost guide.
The press should also be planned as part of brewery waste management, including filtrate collection, solids conveying, cleaning and storage.
For broader system planning, review industrial screw press systems for spent grain.
· Send a representative sample, photos, inlet moisture and particle-size information.
· State normal and peak wet-feed rate, dry-solids load and daily operating hours.
· Define the target cake condition and whether the solids will be dried, used as feed, composted or digested.
· Request trial data for throughput, inlet/cake moisture, filtrate solids loss, power or torque and cleaning frequency.
· Confirm washdown access, wear parts, maintenance intervals and the destination of the separated liquid.
If the destination is animal feed, pressing is normally a pretreatment step and further drying or product conditioning may still be needed. See
spent grain animal-feed processing and spent-grain resource recovery.
Can a screw press replace a dryer?
Not when the final product requires a low moisture content; pressing is usually a mechanical pretreatment step.
Does a smaller screen always work better?
No. It may retain more fines but can increase blinding, so test the opening with actual BSG.
What should a supplier trial measure?
Wet and dry-solids throughput, inlet and cake moisture, filtrate solids loss, power or torque, cleaning frequency and stable run time.
